What’s New?

Hillcrest Publishing Company! We’re stating to build ra shelf of student authors. This term the grade 3s and 4s are meeting each week with Miss Booker. They’re following the steps of Writing Workshop, resulting in a laminated, coil-bound book complete with bar code so that other students can check their book out of the library! The young authors start by developing a character that a reader will care about, identifying both internal and external traits. Then the authors draw/write a story plan in which the character wants something but doesn’t get it! The story unfolds as the character tries to get what they want. The authors then conference with a friend. The writer tells their story plan to a friend or teacher and the listener follows 3 steps:

1) tells the story back to the writer,

2) tells one thing they liked about the story,

3) tells one thing they were confused about.

The writer uses the feedback to create an interesting conflict that isn’t resolved too quickly and that gives the reader satisfaction. The students write their first draft, conference again, and rewrite, looking at spelling, grammar, punctuation. Finally, their story is ready to be typed up (and possibly illustrated). So watch out for these new works of fiction, and Mr. Brinsmead’s non-fiction books on the topic of Medieval Times.
